When you are challenged with building (or transforming your company into) a High-Performance Organization, you are faced with one of the most complex assignments for senior leaders.
Before we take you through some of the key elements for building a High-Performance Organization (HPO), let us first provide you with our definition of a HPO: “A High-Performance Organization is an organization that consistently delivers financial and non-financial results that are better than those of its peers.”
How can you measure whether your organization has become a HPO? As you might have no access to your peers’ financial and non-financial results, it can be difficult to determine whether your organization has achieved becoming a HPO. If you have no access to your peers’ financial and non-financial results, an alternative measure for becoming a HPO is to set stretch targets yourself. Setting stretch targets is NOT guessing. Setting stretch targets involves knowing where you are now and what you are trying to achieve. Stretch targets usually requires significant effort to achieve. Note: Ask yourself how much of a stretch will motivate without causing your employees to become overwhelmed or demoralized.
Based upon our experience and track-record with building and leading high performing (service) organizations, we would argue that the following key elements are crucial building blocks for successfully building a High-Performance Organization:
- Organizational structure
- Leadership, culture and behavior
- Organizational IQ
- Management control systems
- Change management
